Open Access Publishing
Open Access Journals
Open access journals are made freely available to the public over the Internet. The authors retain control of the integrity of their work, and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited. In the "gold" model, the author or his/her institution may have to pay a fee, but the publisher makes the material free to users. In the "green" model, the author self-archives his/her refereed article in a suitable repository that provides interoperability and archiving.

Open Archives / Institutional Repositories
An institutional repository is a digital archive of the work of an institution's faculty, staff, and students. All or part of the content is made available freely to the public. One Canadian example is Erudit (http://www.erudit.org/index.html).
